Topic Proposal - Marie Galetto

Cory Doctorow’s novel Little Brother attempts to answer the question “Why are Americans so uninformed?” Through the context of the novel it is apparent that Doctorow believes that most Americans remain uninformed about the goings on in their country, and about the world in general, unless something affects them directly. Marcus is oblivious to the injustices that surround him until something happens directly to him. Jolu is less outraged about these injustices because he has suffered though many types of prejudice in his life already and is aware of its existence. Most of the literature concerning uninformed Americans concerns itself with statistics and showing the degree to which Americans are ignorant and the subjects about which they know nothing. Doctorow attempts to explain the reasoning behind this stereotype which has started to become truer with the new generation of uninterested youth.
