I personally found a connection to the concept of coffee as this limiting drug in this near futuristic society. Having worked at Starbucks, which is mentioned in the book, I felt connected to this particular theme. They make coffee appear like a drug, which caffeine is, but I saw the consumption of coffee as a parallel to to the consumption of alcohol in present time. Another theme I found connecting to the concept of coffee was the idea of defiance of parents by adolescents. This was very relatable due to the fact I am still a teen myself and have experienced the desire to defy the desires of my parents. While Marcus defies his parents, he is doing so in a justifiable manner in which he tries to help his society at large.
