I decided to do my remix about what would have happened if Ange had escaped with Marcus and Masha. Marcus' decisions would have been a lot different if Ange had been there because he would not have had as much motivation to go back and fight. If he had Ange with him, he would have wanted to escape and save the both of them. He never would have gotten his story to Barbara, and the DHS would not have been caught. I think it is an important distinction, because if everything had gone according to plan that day and Ange had been with Marcus, the book would have a completely different ending. This remix is from the point of view of Marcus, and it alters the scene in the book to what would have happened with Ange there.
We were running through the crowd, and I was concentrating solely on Masha’s strong grip on my wrist and my grip on Ange’s. Everyone around us was screaming and choking. I felt the gas coming down on us, and I checked to make sure the three of us were covering our noses and mouths. As soon as we reached the edge of the crowd Masha let go of her grip on my arm, but I continued to keep a strong hold on Ange. We were sprinting towards a group of DHS cops, who were about to stop us, but Masha held up her badge and they allowed us to pass. Masha ordered us to change out of our vamp clothes and she helped us wipe off the makeup from our faces. She took both f our student cards, ATM cards, and my Fast Pass that I had with me and put them all into a radio-proof bag. As soon as we finished this whole process, which in total took less than a minute, we began moving quickly through the streets to catch a ride that Masha had arranged.
All of a sudden, we heard another voice creep up right behind us, it sounded like pure evil. The three of us turned around at the same time, and I froze as I found myself face to face with Charles. With an evil smirk on his face, Charles claimed he had been watching me ever since I began the Xnet and he recorded a video of me leading the VampMob. He had his phone ready in hand and I knew he was about to call the cops on us. All of a sudden, Masha lurched forward and grabbed the phone out of is hand. She reached for her wallet and opened it in Charles’ face revealing her DHS badge. Ange and I stood there grinning with satisfaction as Charles realized what was happening and was whipped around and handcuffed by Masha. She ordered Ange and I to keep running, so we did, and a few seconds later she caught up to us. Who knows what she did to Charles, but I am sure it was nothing I would object to.
We walked just a little further until we saw the moving van that would be our form of transportation. The driver told Masha that they left us some space under the big table in the van, and the three of us maneuvered our way through to find it. I collapsed to the ground and felt a huge wave of relief pass over my body. We had actually gotten away with it. I escaped and could go into hiding without the DHS finding me, and most importantly I had Ange right by my side. I squeezed her hand and closed my eyes with a smile on my face. As I was drifting off into sleep, feelings of fear and regret pushed past my calm state of relief. I remembered everyone I had left behind to defend themselves against this corrupt system. I thought about my parents who I had left behind and might not ever see again, and Darryl who was still out there somewhere and there was nothing I could do to save him. But then I felt Ange’s arms wrap around me, and I allowed myself to forget about those thoughts and for the first time in a while, drift off into a deep sleep.
